Gopher Roofing & Restoration finds and repairs roof leaks on homes across Minneapolis and the Twin Cities. We trace a leak to its source before we fix anything. The owner comes out to check the leak himself, and that visit is free. If a repair will solve the problem, a repair is what we recommend.

The Stain Is Not the Leak

Water doesn’t fall straight through a roof. It gets in at one point, runs along the wood or the top of the insulation, and drips where it finds a low spot.

So the stain on your bedroom ceiling tells you where the water came out. It doesn’t tell you where it got in. That can be several feet away, sometimes on a different part of the roof.

This is why patching the shingles above a stain often doesn’t work. The leak comes back with the next hard rain, and now you’ve paid for a repair that missed.

We start at the stain and work back to the source. Then we fix the source.

Where Minneapolis Roofs Leak

Most leaks we see come from one of a handful of places. Few of them are in the open field of the shingles.

Ice Dams

An ice dam is a ridge of ice along the edge of the roof. Heat escaping from the house melts the snow higher up. The water runs down to the cold edge and freezes there.

Once the ridge is big enough, the next melt has nowhere to go. It pools behind the ice and backs up under the shingles. Then it shows up as a stain on a ceiling or down an outside wall, usually after a cold spell.

If an ice dam has let water into your house, call us. We find where it got in and repair the damage it did to the roof.

A Leak Rarely Means a New Roof

Most leaks come from one spot. Fix that spot and the rest of the roof carries on.

We recommend a repair when a repair will do. If we find the roof is failing in several places, we’ll tell you that too, and show you why. Our roof replacement page explains how we make that call.

Roof Leak Questions

Water rarely drops straight down. It gets in at one point, then runs along the wood, a rafter or the top of the insulation until it finds a low spot. The stain shows where it came through the ceiling. The entry point can be several feet away, which is why we trace it from the roof side.

The first visit is free. The owner comes out and finds where the water is getting in. What the repair costs depends on the cause. A cracked vent boot is a small job and failed chimney flashing is a bigger one. You get the price in writing, and nothing is done until you approve it.

Usually not. Most leaks come from one spot, like a vent, a chimney, a skylight or a valley, and the rest of the roof is fine. We recommend a repair when a repair will do. If the roof is failing in several places, we will tell you that too and explain why.

That usually points to an ice dam or to moisture from inside the house. Ice at the roof edge can hold melting snow back until it works under the shingles. A bath fan that vents into the attic can also drip like a leak. Both look the same from below, so the source needs checking.

It depends on what caused it, and your insurance company makes that decision. Damage from a storm is treated differently from wear over time. We inspect the roof, document what we find with photographs, and work alongside your adjuster if you file a claim. We will tell you plainly what caused the leak.

Call 612-331-7663. Our repair team is equipped to respond quickly to active leaks, and we’ll get a fully equipped truck out to assess and stop the damage as soon as possible. We’re open Monday to Saturday, 7am to 8pm. Until we arrive, catch the water and move what you can out of the way.
